The project of a new port infrastructure at Granadilla, in the southwestern coast of the island of Tenerife, received a favorable Environmental Statement by the Spanish Environmental Authority in February 2003. Subsequently, the European Commission introduced, in its Opinion of 6th of November 2006, some additional corrective and compensatory measures in accordance with the provisions of article 6 of the Habitat Directive. All possible effects of the port of Granadilla on the “species of Community interest” Caretta caretta (loggerhead turtle), deriving from the impact on the habitat needed for its conservation, would be compensated by the declaration of two new SCIs (Sites of Community Importance) containing sandbanks which are slightly covered by sea water all the time (habitat code 1110). This action was fulfilled in 2008. |
